Five medals were already awarded on the first day of competition at the Sochi Olympics, and the United States won the first gold medal.

Day one roll of honor

U.S.US snowboarder Sage Kotsenburg claimed the first gold in men’s snowboard slopestyle event.

With two medals, the US stand fourth in the overall medal standings, behind Norway, Canada, and the Netherlands.

Kotsenburg, with winning score of 93.5, tweeted his surprise at the victory.

“WOW!! I just won the Olympics!! Bringing back the first Gold here to the USA! Love seeing all the support from everyone YOU RULE!!” he posted.

Visions of Sochi

American Shaun White dropped out before before qualification for the snowboard slopestyle event started.

When he withdrew, no one thought his 20-year-old teammate would win the first gold medal of these games.

Meanwhile, the second gold was claimed by Norway’s Marit Bjoergen in the women’s skiathlon. She is expected to be a dominant force in the Sochi Olympics.
